Celebrating the Season – Easter

This coming week April 1 through April 8 is what we call Holy Week in Christian tradition. It is a time when we remember Jesus’ last week on earth from His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the last supper with the disciples, to His death and resurrection. It is our custom to celebrate with others in the community through combined services with Wingate Baptist Church on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Palm Sunday – Sunday April 1 at the 11:00 am worship service we will recall Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. This year we have an added blessing – seven confirmands will join the church. These young people have been taking confirmation classes and are ready to declare their faith. After the service there will be a covered dish lunch to celebrate with them. Join us to welcome them into full membership in the church.

Maundy Thursday – Thursday April 5 we will meet at Wingate Baptist Church for dinner at 5:45 and an Ecumenical Service, including communion, to remember Jesus’ last supper with the disciples at 6:30. (The dinner at 5:45 is $5 for adults, $4 for children, or $12 for a family.)

Good Friday – Friday April 6 we will remember Jesus’ death on the cross. At 3:00 pm the cloth on the cross outside the church will be changed. This is a brief time of readings and meditation. At 7:00 pm there will be a service in the sanctuary.

Easter Sunday – April 8 we will celebrate Jesus’ resurrection with a Sunrise Service at 7 am beside the lake on Wingate University campus followed by breakfast in the fellowship hall. Later at the 11 am service we will have special music from the choir. Instead of doing a traditional cantata this year we are singing a series of special anthems with readings. Jerilyn does a wonderful job of selecting music and this year is no exception. I have certainly enjoyed learning this music and I’m sure you will enjoy the service.

Anyone is welcome to join us. You don’t have to be a member of our church to celebrate with us. Come help us celebrate and spread the meaning of what the Easter season is all about!
