School of Christian Mission and Health Kits

There are several good things in the newsletter this month. I’ll post them individually over the next couple of days. This note is from Linda Ferguson the president of our United Methodist Women.

It’s official!  My next two vacation days will be spent at Pheiffer University attending a conference event for United Methodist Women.  I  have attended “School of Christian Mission” before, however this will be my first time as a resident.  While I can’t say I am thrilled about the idea of sleeping in a dorm room,  I am excited about the mission studies being offered this year.

Each of the studies connects to this year’s theme,  “That All May Have Life”.  The geographical mission study is Haiti: Challenges & Hopes,  the spiritual growth study is Immigration in the Bible, and the Social issue study is Poverty.  I am not the only member of The Busy Group making plans to attend this event, and I know we will all come away better equipped to carry out the mission of our church.

Attending events like these also gives us an opportunity to provide for others through a hands-on mission project.  This year we are being asked to bring Health Kits. In a sealed one-gallon plastic bag place the following new items:
1 hand towel (15” x 25” up to 17” x 27”, no kitchen towels)
1 wash cloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket size)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz and up)
1 toothbrush (single brush in original wrapper, adult size only)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
Each kit also needs to include $2 to help cover the cost of buying toothpaste and shipping the kits around the world.

If you would like to help with this project you can put together kits on your own, donate individual items, or you may make a financial contribution. (Put “health kits” in the memo line on your check made out to Wingate UMC.) Members of The Busy Group will purchase the needed items and assemble the kits.

Donations will be accepted until Sunday, July 15th. This will allow us to complete the kits prior to the beginning of the “School of Christian Mission.”

Thank you for your support.
